How Do I Enrol a Deed Poll?

Simply drafting a deed poll is enough to legally change your name in Ireland, but many governmental bodies, financial institutions, and the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) require the deed poll to be enrolled in the Central Office of the High Court to accept it as proof of your name change.

Enrolling places your name change on a publicly searchable register (the data provided by this website).

Step-by-Step Enrolment Process

1

Draft the Deed Poll

You can draft the document yourself following precedents available online or engage a solicitor to draft it for you. It must be printed on high-quality deed paper or parchment.

2

Execute the Document

You must sign the deed poll in the presence of a witness over the age of 18. This witness must then swear an Affidavit of Attesting Witness before an independent practicing solicitor or a Commissioner for Oaths.

3

Gather Required Documentation

To enrol the deed poll, you will need to submit:

  • The original executed Deed Poll.
  • The sworn Affidavit of Attesting Witness.
  • A certified copy of your Birth Certificate.
  • Photographic identification (e.g., Passport or Driving Licence).
  • The required court fee (currently €60, payable by court fee stamp).
4

Submit to the High Court

You must attend the Central Office of the High Court in the Four Courts, Dublin, in person (by appointment only). If all documentation is in order, the court will retain the original documents and issue you a certified copy of the enrolled Deed Poll.

Important Note on Privacy

Once a deed poll is enrolled, it becomes a public record. This means anyone can search for your former and new name, along with your date of enrolment, both at the court's physical offices and through online databases like DeedPollRegister.ie.
