Updating Official Documents

Once your Deed Poll is executed (and enrolled if required), you must formally notify various organizations of your change of name. Each entity has its own specific requirements for the proof they need.

Irish Passport

To update your name on your Irish passport, you cannot simply amend your current one; you must apply for a new passport. You will need to provide your original executed Deed Poll along with evidence that you have been using your new name for at least two years (e.g., bank statements, utility bills, official correspondence).

Note: If you cannot provide two years' proof of usage, the Passport Office may refuse to issue the passport in the new name, or may endorse it with your previous name.

Driving Licence (NDLS)

The National Driver Licence Service strictly requires an enrolled Deed Poll to change the name on your driving licence or learner permit. An unenrolled deed poll will not be accepted. You must apply in person at an NDLS centre with the original enrolled Deed Poll document and your current licence.

Public Services Card (PSC) & Revenue

To update your Public Services Card and your records with the Department of Social Protection (which synchronises with Revenue), you must attend an Intreo Centre in person. Bring your current PSC, your long-form birth certificate, and your original enrolled Deed Poll.

Banks and Financial Institutions

Most banks require you to visit a branch in person to present your original Deed Poll and a piece of updated photographic identification (like your new passport or driving licence) before they will change the name on your accounts and issue new physical cards.

Other Considerations

  • Employers: Notify your HR department and provide them with a copy of your Deed Poll so they can update your payroll and tax records.
  • Utilities and Services: Contact your phone, electricity, and internet providers to update your billing details.
  • Property: If you own property, you should consult your solicitor about updating the Land Registry or Registry of Deeds.
